What is a 3 Way Mixer Tap?

What is a 3 way mixer tap? When looking for plumbing components and products, we often come across this term. So what is it? How does it work? What are the advantages of this plumbing component?

Types of Mixer Tap

A mixer tap is a valve that controls the release and the temperature of water. Single mixer tap consists of only a single handle. One way controls the flow of water and the other way controls the temperature (by mixing the hot and cold water).

A two-tap mixer is able to regulate hot and cold water flows using two different handles. This provides a better of controlling water temperature, but is not very practical.

A 3 way mixer tap on the other hand is a valve that can dispense hot, cold and filtered water. Many plumbers and consumers favour this advanced mixer tap because it is is a brilliant way to have hot, cold and filtered water all from one tap.

How does a 3 way mixer tap work?

When properly installed, a three way mixer tap can dispense hot, cold and filtered water. This type of mixer tap has 3 inlets, 2 handles and 1 spout. This design allows the separation of hot, cold and filtered water. One inlet is for the hot water, another is for the cold water and the last is connected to an under sink water filter. One of the handles is used for dispensing hot and cold water, while the other one is used to dispense filtered water.

Advantages of three way mixer tap

One of the best features about 3 way mixers is that they avoid the requirement for an additional tap for filtered water, which also saves money on installation - and is one less hole the installer needs to make in your sink or benchtop! With this type of mixer taps, you use a single handle to adjust your water to the right temperature. Aside from saving valuable time, this also helps you avoid wasting water while trying to get the right water temperature, which is often the case with two-tap mixers.

Another advantage of a 3 way mixer taps is it gives you the option to get filtered water at any time. While some people prefer to get filtered water for drinking, dish washing, etc, some people don’t. 3 way mixer taps allow you to draw filtered water and unfiltered hot or cold tap water any time you want to. Aside from having a separate (usually smaller) handle for the filtered water, quality three way mixer taps have a separate line inside for the filtered water.  This eliminates the possibility of cross-contamination of filtered and unfiltered water.

3-way mixer taps provide better user experience because they are easier to use. It is very easy to teach older generations and kids how to use this type of tap. This mixer tap also delivers the designed water temperature quickly and they allow users to save time and money on water expenses.
